Dale Chihuly is America’s most famous artist working in glass. Isola di San Giacomo in Palude, a stunningly colorful assemblage that is more than fifteen feet tall, is made out of 322 unique pieces of glass that were hand-blown in various studios in Finland, Ireland, Mexico, Italy, and the United States. The title refers to the small Venetian island where it was first displayed as part of the exhibition “Chihuly Over Venice,” an installation of fourteen works which later toured the world. The Columbus Museum of Art hosted the tour in 1998-99, and this work became part of the permanent collection after the exhibition’s close.
