The most popular commercial artist of his era, Norman Rockwell painted more than three hundred cover illustrations for the Saturday Evening Post, including this one, which appeared in the August 22, 1953 issue. Soda Jerk, presents a whimsical look at a cast of characters in a small-town drugstore soda fountain. A confident young man - one of the artist's sons was the model - holds court for three young women and a dog, all of whom eagerly give him their undivided attention. An older man, seen at the upper left of the composition, observes the proceedings with bemusement.
