COLUMBUS MUSEUM OF ART PRESENTS MATERIAL MATTERS
QUILTMAKING IN THE 21ST CENTURY
(Columbus, OH) – Challenge your traditional ideas of quiltmaking at the Columbus Museum of Art June 20 – August 31. Material Matters: Quiltmaking in the 21st Century presents the works of international artists whose use of innovative techniques, concepts, and styles, create works that address environmental concerns, political and social issues, and cultural and generational differences – frequently with a splash of humor.
“The essence of Material Matters is the impact that the studio quilters movement has had upon the fine-art world,” said Tracy Rieger, co-curator of the exhibition. “This exhibition recognizes artists whose inspiration and impetus is fabric, more specifically quilts. It showcases their drive to take a medium that is anchored in centuries of tradition and to shake the very foundation of our assumptions about what quilting can be.”
The artists of Material Matters have been selected from participating teachers and students of the Quilt Surface Design Symposium, which has drawn contributors from around the world since 1990. Michael James, chair of the Department of Textiles, Clothing and Design at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, says, “It is arguably the most comprehensive and highest quality art quilt conference in the world.”
“Strong, innovative expressions from artists around the globe are assembled in this broad and in-depth exhibition of meticulously made works, demonstrating the dedication and courage these artists have developed because material matters passionately to them,” said Linda Fowler, co-curator of the exhibition. “For Material Matters, we selected quilts to highlight some of the most contemporary, cutting-edge work.”
The exhibition also includes a new series of interactive video stations, featuring artist interviews and demonstrations of how they create their quilts as well as a cell phone tour that allows visitors to learn more about many of the works.
