Coverlet (for Maria J. Clark)

Harry Tyler (American, 1801 - 58)

1938. Oil on canvas, 87 x 79". 1935.009

Harry Tyler of Jefferson County, New York, was a popular and prolific weaver, and 268 coverlets are attributed to him. According to the inscription woven into the coverlet, this one was commissioned for Maria J. Clark, probably for her twenty-first birthday. Besides dying his own yarns, Tyler designed and continually revised his centerfields and borders. Typically, this coverlet was constructed by joining two panels down the center, each panel equal to the full width of the loom. The lion is Tyler’s distinctive logo.
