Enter the world of Elijah Pierce, a Columbus resident for 60 years who ran an East Side barber shop filled with his painted wood carvings of Bible stories, fables, animals, and noted figures from Moses to Archie Griffith. You'll learn much about Pierce and the meaning behind his carvings.


• Climb into a barber chair and experience the sights and sounds of the period. You'll dial up news of the day decade by decade on a classic Bakelite radio.


• Create a crayon rubbing of figures inspired by Mr. Pierce's animal carvings and play the Animal Puzzlers computer game!


• Learn who Mr. Pierce's heroes were, and create drawings of your own personal heroes.

• Hear the artist and others remember what life was like in the barber shop.


• See Mr. Pierce's carved signs, such as "Your life is a book and every day is a page," and create your own sign with an important message.


• View the artist's famous Book of Wood depicting 33 scenes from each year of Jesus Christ's life, then create your own scenes using magnetic reproductions of Mr. Pierce's carvings.
