Animals in Art
We share our world with many animals. A variety of animals are present in the Museum's collections and special exhibitions. Images of animals provide opportunities for visitors to explore ideas about pets and helpers that assist people in their work.
Building Blocks of Art
Reinforce primary curriculum by learning about color, line, and shape in paintings, sculptures, photographs, and other objects. Children will closely examine works of art and engage in lively gallery games.
Tours for Visitors Third Grade and Up
American Art
Take a close look at the Museum's collection of American art, including the extensive collection of works by Columbus natives George Bellows and Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson. The tour includes selections from the recently acquired Philip J. and Suzanne Schiller Collection of American Social Commentary Art 1930-1970, including works by Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, and Ben Shahn.
Art & Community
Visitors address such questions as: What is a community? How would a community be different if there were no art or artists? During this tour, visitors spend at least half their time in Eye Spy: Adventures in Art, our interactive exhibition. The life and work of Columbus hometown artists George Bellows and Elijah Pierce are included in Eye Spy.
Art & Poetry
Focusing on a limited number of works in the Museum, visitors participate in poetry-writing exercises that sharpen verbal and writing skills and help to develop visual perception. Visitors work with docents in small groups of 5-6 and receive their own "journal" and CMA pencil.
Tours are limited to 60 participants and take two hours. We highly recommend that you prepare students for the Art & Poetry tour by obtaining our classroom resource materials on a free CD-Rom.
ARTful Games: Thinking through Art
Students take advantage of the rich resources that works of art offer for thinking beyond information recall and as they discover the joy of reasoning, problem-solving, assumption-probing, decision-making, reflective judgment, problem-finding, and perspective-taking. They exercise their thinking skills by participating in challenging activities that are led by our skilled docent educators. Docents employ their most successful routines, learned in years of teaching. The skills gained will be useful in many contexts and disciplines.
ARTful Reading
The ARTful Reading tour emphasizes the process of learning to "read" a work of art. Students make close observations, ask thoughtful questions about an object, postulate possible interpretations, and confirm and defend their interpretations by referencing the work of art. Combined with pre-tour preparation and post-tour follow-up, students learn skills that promote higher-order thinking and ongoing self-reflection. A classroom resource on CD-ROM is available free of charge.
This program is supported with funds from the Harry C. Moore Foundation and made possible by educational publishers MacMillan/ McGraw-Hill and Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, and Pre K-12, a division of the McGraw-Hill Companies Supporting Sponsors.
European Art
Visitors often begin in the beautiful Salon, where many of the Museum's treasured earliest works are found, and then explore the four galleries and hallways of our European wing. The Museum is known for its outstanding collection of European Modernism, including examples of Impressionism, Expressionism, Futurism, and Orphism. Among the noted artists represented are Cezanne, Degas, Klee, Matisse, Monet and Renoir.
Get to Know the Columbus Museum of Art
Visitors will be able to find their way around the Museum's galleries, garden, and collections after taking this tour. They will discover some of the museum's history and learn about its architecture. They also may participate in lively discussions of a few selections from our European, American, and photography collections.
State of the Art: Art of the State
Turn one field trip into two when you sign up for the two-hour State of the Art: Art of the State tour. Visitors spend approximately 45 minutes touring the Museum and then either walk or drive to the Statehouse, arriving by 11:00 AM. This collaborative program enables students to visit the Museum for a tour and discussion of Ohio artists and then visit the Ohio Statehouse to explore its history and architecture.
Wednesdays and Fridays, 10:00 am-noon during the school year.

Art & Social Issues
In May 2005, the Columbus Museum of Art acquired the Philip J. and Suzanne Schiller Collection of Art of Social Conscience, 1930-1970. When added to the Museum's already outstanding body of twentieth-century American art including the New York Photo League, it has become one of the nation's most important collections concerned with social commentary. These critical images create a vivid, authentic picture of American history and culture and serve as a springboard for confronting issues that continue to face America today. Visitors explore such questions as: Do artists reflect the culture in which they live? Can art stimulate social change? Free CD-ROM resource available.
