Dr. Pavel Drábek, Professor of Drama and Theatre Practice, School of the Arts, University of Hull, United Kingdom, will speak on history of productions of Shakespeare’s plays in the Czech Republic, formerly part of Czechoslovakia. His lecture, “Shakespeare in Czech Lands,” is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Shakespeare in Prague: Imagining the Bard in the Heart of Europe. Shakespeare’s plays have long carried special meaning for Czech and Slovakian audiences, who have embraced during their long history such universal themes as national identity and struggles against oppression that are found in the British playwright’s works. Cost of the program is $10 for nonmembers and $5 for members.
