Wednesdays@2 – Mozart to Matisse: Romantic Art of Germany
March 11, 2020
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Location: CMA
Art of the Romantic movement in Germany will be discussed in a lecture that covers the period during which Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 was composed. Characterized by strong emotional expression and submission to the sublime power of natural forces, Romanticism found a voice in German literature and art as well as music beginning in the late 18th century, in the writings of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and the paintings of Caspar David Friedrich and Phillip Otto Runge. These artists emphasized the transcendent, spiritual elements revealed in nature through dramatic, often mystical canvases that embodied themes such as the infinite power of the divine, the inevitability of death, and the promise of spiritual transcendence. The cost for this program is $20 for nonmembers (includes general admission) and $5 for members.
