For Immediate Release:July 14, 2014Media Contact:Nancy Colvin, 614.629.0303                        nancy.colvin@cmaohio.org CMA HONORS ARTISTSS LEGACYPaul Bourguignon: A Fiftieth Anniversary Retrospective (Columbus, OH) - In 1964, the Columbus Museum of Art held an exhibition of the work of Belgian-born Columbus artist Paul-Henri Bourguignon. Fifty years later CMA celebrates the work of this talented visual artist with  Paul Bourguignon: A Fiftieth Anniversary Retrospective on view October 17, 2014 January 18, 2015. Bourguignon was a prolific writer and journalist, a skillful photographer, and an avid observer of the human condition. His widely collected works are found in American museums, and in public and private collections throughout the U.S. and Europe, including the Columbus Museum of Art. One critic noted, "When Bourguignon concentrates on faces, the pathos of the human condition stands out." Looking at Pauls work as a whole one can see the artist recognizing and digesting the dominant European art trends of the largely mid-twentieth century, never copying but rather working in or through styles similar to Édouard Vuillard, Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, Georges Rouault, Amedeo Modigliani and perhaps even El Greco, said Dominique H. Vasseur, Chief Curator, Columbus Museum of Art. His early figurative style loses its fussiness and detail and become simple and bold, oftentimes colorful and others, quietly monochromatic. Bourguignon began his arts studies in Brussels' Académie des Beaux Arts and then studied art history at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. His first solo exhibition was at the Galérie d'Egmont in Brussels at age 22.  He met his wife, Erika, in Haiti and they settled in Columbus, Ohio in 1950 after she joined the faculty of The Ohio State University.  The Columbus Museum of Art creates great experiences with great art for everyone. The Greater Columbus Arts Council, Nationwide Foundation, Ohio Arts Council, and the Charlotte R. Haller, Lewis K. Osborne, and Robert B. Hurst funds of The Columbus Foundation provide ongoing support. CMA and the Museum Store are open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm, and until 8:30 pm every Thursday.
