Join David Stark, chief curator, for an orientation lecture on the exhibition Picasso: The Great War, Experimentation and Change. Stark will explore the varied art in the exhibition: paintings and drawings by Picasso—from bold abstractions to exquisitely realistic portrait drawings—photographs showing the artist and his friends, and costumes designed for the avant-garde ballet, Parade. Wednesdays @ 2: Picasso and Ceramics: An Overview

Chief Curator David Stark will discuss the ceramics on view in Picasso: 25 Years of Edition Ceramics in the context of Picasso’s art during his later years. Between the wars, the dream-like imagery of Surrealism influenced many of Picasso’s works, including one of his best-known canvases, Guernica (1937), now in Madrid. Decades later, in his 80s, he designed his masterpiece of public sculpture in America, popularly known as Chicago Picasso. Discover the many facets of a celebrated artist at the height of his powers. Open Studio
Every Saturday in July, 1:00 – 3:00 PM
Create your own wearable art based on costumes in the Picasso exhibition during Open Studio. Visitors of all ages are welcome to drop into CMA’s Center for Creativity Studio to explore ideas, solve creative challenges, and collaborate with friends or family. This program is free with admission, no registration requested.
A Picasso Performance
July 7, 6:00 – 9:00 PM
Portable Theater presents the play, “A Picasso” in Cardinal Health Auditorium. This riveting drama by Ohio native Jeffrey Hatcher is set in 1941 Paris during the German occupation. While leaving his favorite cafe, Pablo Picasso is picked up by two mysterious men in trench coats and taken to an unknown destination where he awaits his Nazi interrogator. Is his life in danger? Tickets are $25 for nonmembers and $20 for members, and include a tour of the exhibition, the performance, and a talk back with the cast and Chief Curator David Stark. Register here.

Join Sara Hume, Curator of the Kent State University Museum, for a presentation on fashion and the Great War. The Great War ushered in tremendous upheaval that was reflected not only in the work of artists like Picasso, but also in the aesthetics of daily life, particularly in clothing and accessories. This talk will present images of actual garments to illustrate how technological, political and social change led to a dramatic transformation of fashion.
