Meet Your Creative Community: June & July

CMA values the role artists play in society to imagine and question, and we see the Museum as a laboratory for new ideas. Meet Your Creative Community features Columbus artists premiering new projects at CMA.

Film summary:
In 1912, every Black family living in Forsyth County, Georgia was forcibly driven out by the White citizens living there. They abandoned their land, their homes, and their jobs in fear for their lives. For the next 75 years, the Black population remained at zero. In 1987, efforts to bring positive change to Forsyth County were once again met with violent opposition from the citizens committed to keeping it an all-White community.

We tell the story of Danny Pittman, a White police officer who sees what’s happening, isn’t 100% sure where he stands on the matter, but struggles with what would happen if he spoke out against it.

His fellow officers and other Forsyth County residents feel they have a right to remain an all-White community. Danny feels he has the right to remain silent about the injustices happening all around him. And the former Black population feels they had a right to remain in Forsyth County in the first place. These differing views reach a boiling point and lead to an explosive climax.

THE RIGHT TO REMAIN is recommended for high school-aged students, college-aged students, and general adult audiences. The film contains strong language and depictions of violence. It is recommended that children under 12 not view the film.

Community Book Club: The Turtle with an Afro
July 11, 11:00 AM
Via Zoom

Join CMA and local author Dr. Carlotta Penn for an interactive family program, including a screening of The Turtle With an Afro cartoon, an animated short based on her new book, The Turtle With an Afro.

The Turtle With an Afro is a children’s picture book written by Columbus educator and author, Carlotta Penn, and illustrated by Audy Popoola, a Maryland-based artist. Animations are by Claudia Jackson and Pedro Fequiere. This fun, lyrical story of a Turtle who loves her Afro is a celebration of curly, kinky, coily hair in all its forms, and a lesson on self-love and acceptance. A fantastic, fabulous, feisty story!

Penn is an educator and creative who believes in justice and in the power of arts and literature to activate change in the world. Watch her “Lifting Black Voices in Children’s Books” Ted Talk.

Visit daydreamerspress.com for more information and to purchase the book.
